Insufficient permissions — what this means and how to fix it

The 'Insufficient permissions' error means your user account does not have access to perform that action. Here is what to do.

What does this error mean?

Every user on AIM is assigned a role that controls what they can see and do on the platform. An "Insufficient permissions" error means the action you are trying to take — creating a site, editing a model, viewing a capture, adding a user — is not available to your current role.

Reading an article will not fix this. The only way to resolve it is for an administrator on your account to update your role in the platform.

User roles on AIM

AIM has several user roles with different levels of access. The main ones are:

Account Admin — full access to everything, including user management, billing, and all sites across the account.

Platform Administrator — can create and manage sites, users, and projects. Cannot access billing.

Surveyor / Capture Operative — can create and upload captures for assigned sites. Cannot manage users or account settings.

End User / Data Consumer — view-only access to sites they have been given access to. Cannot create or edit anything.

Step 1: Contact your AIM administrator

The fastest way to resolve a permissions error is to contact the person in your organisation who manages your AIM account. Ask them to check your current role and update it to one that includes the access you need.

If you do not know who your administrator is, check with your line manager or the person who originally set up your AIM account.

Step 2: If you are the administrator

If you are the account administrator and you are still seeing this error, it may mean:

- You are trying to access a site that belongs to a sub-client you do not have access to

- Your account has a restriction applied at the organisation level

- There is a session issue and logging out and back in may resolve it

Try logging out of AIM and back in. If the error persists, contact the AIM support team.

Step 3: Contact AIM support

If you cannot identify your administrator and you need access urgently, contact the AIM support team directly. Include your name, your organisation name, and a description of what you were trying to do when the error appeared. We can identify your account and advise on the correct next step.
